How story views work
When you watch a story, your username is added to that story's viewer list. Only the person who posted the story can see that list. It shows the usernames of everyone who watched each photo or video in it.
Instagram also needs you to be logged in to watch stories, so there's no official way to view Instagram stories without login.
What about “anonymous story viewer” websites?
These sites ask for a username and show that person's stories. Instagram doesn't provide a way for websites to do this, so they usually depend on scraping or shared logged-in accounts. That matters for you:
| Risk | What it means |
|---|
| Your account | Some ask you to log in or “verify” with your Instagram details. Never do this. |
|---|
| Malware and scams | Fake buttons, pop-ups and app downloads are common on these sites. |
|---|
| They break Instagram's rules | Instagram doesn't allow collecting its content by automated means without permission. |
|---|
| They stop working | Instagram blocks them regularly, so results are unreliable. |
|---|
| Privacy of others | Watching someone closely without them knowing can cross into stalking. |
|---|
This is why our site doesn't offer a story viewer. See our Safety page for more red flags.
“Tricks” you may read about
You'll find tips like turning on airplane mode or only half-swiping to the next story. They depend on how the app happens to load content, can change with any update, and may still count as a view. We don't recommend relying on them.
Safer, honest options
- Just watch normally. Seeing a story is ordinary; most people expect viewers.
- Check Highlights later. Many creators keep their best stories on their profile.
- Look at public posts and reels instead. Instagram doesn't show creators a list of who viewed those. Open them with our Instagram Viewer, no account needed.
- If you're avoiding someone, use Instagram's mute, restrict or block tools instead of watching from the side.
