Stories: no notification, but a viewer list
Instagram doesn't send an alert when you watch someone's story. Instead, the person who posted it can open the story and see the number of viewers and their usernames. Only they can see this list.
That's why there's no honest way to watch a story without showing up. More on that in How to watch Instagram stories anonymously
Can someone see if I view their Instagram profile?
Instagram doesn't offer a feature that shows who visited your profile. Apps that claim to reveal “profile stalkers” can't get that information from Instagram, and many ask for your login. Avoid them.

Instagram changes features from time to time, so treat this as a guide to how things work today, not a guarantee.
Respect works both ways
If you'd rather someone didn't see your stories, use Instagram's privacy tools: hide your story from specific people, use Close Friends, or make your account private. To keep your own stories, see our Instagram Story Downloader guide.
